The 5 series vehicles came out in 1972. The currently offered fifth generation of the model had its premiere at the 2003 Brno Motor Show, while the Touring was presented in Geneva in 2004. The styling of the two versions of the vehicle presents the latest BMW line. The range of the 5 series engines was renewed at the beginning of 2005 and now comprises four petrol engines: a 2.5-liter of 177 or 218 hp, a new 3.0-liter 258 hp engine first introduced at the end of 2004, and a 4.4-liter 333 hp V8 power plant. Moreover, the 5 series models can have one of three diesel engines: a 2.5-liter 177 hp unit and a 3.0-liter 218 hp or a 272 hp plant. The latter, equipped with two turbo compressors, comes in the 535d model introduced in the second half of 2004. All the versions have been provided with new, 6-speed manual, sequential or automatic gearboxes. Since the beginning of 2005, the 525xi and 530xi have been available with a permanent four-wheel drive system.
