BMW presented its first recreational and cross-country model – the X5 – in 1999. The first modernization was performed in the fall of 2003, accompanied by refreshing the range of engines and introducing a new drive system – the xDrive. The X5 model is now available with a 3.0-liter 231 hp petrol engine, a 4.4-liter 320 hp V8 unit with the Valvetronic timing system, and a new 3.0-liter 218 hp diesel. All these power plants now come with a 6-speed, manual or automatic gearbox. The leading version of the BMW X5, the 4.8-liter iS model with a new 4.8-liter 360 hp V8 engine, has been available since spring 2004.
