Production of the Mondeo started in 1993. The currently offered second generation of this model was presented in Paris in 2000. At the beginning of 2005, minor design and equipment changes were introduced. The vehicle comes as a classic sedan, a 5-door liftback, and as a station wagon. Unlike the models of the first generation which did not succeed much on the market, the presently available model enjoys great respect with buyers. The basic unit of 1.8-liter develops 110, 125 or 130 hp. The latter, offered since 2003, features direct fuel injection. Moreover, the Mondeo may be equipped with a 2.0-liter 145 hp engine, a 2.5-liter 170 hp or a 3.0-liter 204 hp V6 plant, or a 2.0-liter 90 hp TDCi or a 2.0-liter TDCi diesel with the common rail system of 115 or 130 hp. Since 2004, a new 2.2-liter 155 hp diesel engine has also been offered. The sports Mondeo version marked as the ST 220 is driven by a 3.0-liter 226 hp plant and comes in all three body versions.
