The third generation of the Astra appeared in Frankfurt/Main in 2003. Initially, a 5-door version was presented, in spring 2004 the station wagon was released, and in the fall of 2004 – the sports, 3-door GTC version. The new Astra, which is distinguished by its original styling, has been equipped with a 1.4-liter 90 hp engine, a 1.6-liter 105 hp unit, and a1.8-liter 125 hp plant, known from the previous model; a 2.0-liter Turbo of 170 or 200 hp; and diesel plants: a 1.7-liter CDTi of 80 or 100 hp, and a new 1.9-liter CDTi of 120 or 150 hp. The Astra will soon get a 1.3-liter CDTi engine of 90 hp. In the sports, 3-door OPC version, a 2.0-liter 240 hp Turbo is mounted. In 2005, in Geneva, the prototype of a 3-door GTC version provided with a hybrid powertrain consisting of a1.7-liter 125 hp CDTi engine and two electric motors of 30 and 40 kW, respectively, was presented. The system will soon be fitted to series vehicles.
