The second generation of the A3 model in its 3-door hatchback version was shown in Geneva at the beginning of 2003, and the 5-door version, called the Sportback, in June 2004. Both vehicles replaced the previous generation model produced since mid- 1996. The new vehicle utilizes the design based on the fifth generation Golf. The Audi A3 holds the market position of an elegant, luxuriously equipped compact car, designed for more fastidious and wealthier buyers. The current range of A3 engines comprises a 1.6-liter 102 hp unit, 1.6-liter FSI 115 hp and 2.0-liter FSI 150 hp engines, and TDI plants with direct fuel injection and united injectors: a 1.9-liter 105 hp engine and the new 2.0-liter 140 hp. The A3 model is also offered with a turbocharged 2.0-liter TFSI engine of 200 hp or, in its leading version, with a 3.2-liter 250 hp V6 engine connected with the Quattro transmission, also available with the 2.0-liter TFSI and 2.0 TDI power plants. Upon request, selected A3 engines can be accompanied by a modern, 6-speed automatic DSG gearbox. Presently, the 3-door version of the vehicle features identical styling of the front part of the body, called the Single Frame, as the Sportback model.
