The Fusion represents a new class of vehicles with a raised body, comprising the features of city cars combined with those of compact minivans. As a prototype, the Fusion was presented in Frankfurt/ Main in 2001, and entered the market in the fall of 2002. It employs the floor panel and other mechanisms of the Fiesta, but it is slightly longer and higher than the latter. Since 2005, the basic power plant of the Fusion model is a 1.25-liter 75 hp unit, athough 1.4-liter 80 hp and 1.6-liter 100 hp engines are also available, as are the 1.4-liter 68 hp and 1.6-liter 90 hp diesels, the outcome of cooperation with the PSA company. Under the Fusion+ name luxury versions of the vehicle are offered.
